As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to evolve, our goal at Life’s Work Physical Therapy remains to help you get better. While a virtual visit for physical therapy may seem unusual at first, we have been providing this service since the pandemic began. Whether you are dealing with an acute knee injury, shoulder injury, or chronic neck or back pain, a virtual physical therapy visit can help keep your recovery on track.
During a virtual physical therapy visit, your physical therapist can provide education, teach and demonstrate new exercises, perform ergonomic evaluations and answer questions. In fact, most of what is done in physical therapy can be easily converted into this virtual format. If you have been exposed to someone with Covid-19 or are having symptoms or illness, are feeling uncomfortable with coming into the clinic, or have traveled recently, a virtual physical therapy visit is an excellent alternative!
Here are a few tips that can help make your virtual visit as efficient and effective as possible.
1. Determine which platform will be the easiest for you to use
The first thing to do is assess which of the platforms we offer will work the best for the device you intend to use. At Life’s Work, we use Zoom, Skype and Facetime. Let us know ahead of time which platform works the best so we can set up the virtual physical therapy visit. If using Zoom, our front desk will send you an email with the meeting link and your PT will start the meeting at the appointment time. If you use Skype or Facetime, your PT will call you at the designated time.
2. Set up your exercise area
To ensure a successful virtual physical therapy visit, determine the area where you will complete your appointment. An open space where you can freely move around will work the best in terms of the PT assessment and having room to exercise. If you use any bands or weights, set them nearby for easy access. Additionally, set up your screen in a place where you can see your physical therapist and they can see you. This is so they can demonstrate exercises and give you cues and feedback.
3. Log into KEET
Our patient platform, KEET, is where your physical therapist will update your exercises and where you can message your physical therapist with any questions. The platform contains detailed instructions on how to perform exercises as well as videos demonstrating them. Your physical therapist will also indicate how many repetitions and sets of exercises to do.
4. Prepare for the virtual physical therapy visit
Wear comfortable clothing you can exercise and move around in for your physical therapy visit. Double-check the device you are using to make sure it is charged or plugged in and gather any supplies you need. Additionally, if you have specific questions for your physical therapist, it can help to write them down and have them nearby.
Following the virtual physical therapy visit, your physical therapist will update your exercises on KEET. If there are any changes to your care plan the front desk will call you after the appointment. If you have a co-pay, it can easily be paid over the phone or online. If you have any other follow-up questions for your physical therapist, you can message them on KEET or through email at your convenience.
